While the two cinematic takes on the webslinger leave a lot to be desired (get me started on it some time), get an inside peek at the writing process that went into crafting his tales over the years direct from the writers and artists that brought him to life for over 40 years with Comics Creators on Spider-Man (Titan Books, ❱4.99 SRP). Guests include Elton John, Eric Clapton, Paul McCartney, and even a duet with his late brother Carl. Those powers are still evident on Getting' in Over My Head (Rhino, $18.98 SRP), only his third solo album (the last of which was released way back in 1998). While not up to his 60's peak as a songwriter, he's still a commanding melody-maker to this day, able to craft a tune out of the most basic of elements that is instantly memorable. Also available for you del Toro fans is a new special edition of The Devil's Backbone (Columbia/Tristar, Rated R, DVD-$19.95 SRP), with an audio commentary, making-of featurette, storyboard comparisons, and trailers.Ĭall me funny, but I still greet every new Brian Wilson album as a gift.

For those alone, this set is worth picking up. Even better, there's also a clutch of classic Gerald McBoing-Boing shorts from the Columbia vaults. Even though an expanded edition will be released later this year, the current 2-disc set is nothing to shake a stick at – including cast & creator audio commentaries, set visits, deleted scenes with optional del Toro commentary, a 2 1/2 hour making-of documentary, trailers, TV spots, and much more.

I also have issues with the bright palette of the film (washing out the color might have added some much-needed atmosphere, keeping it closer to Mignola's source material, plus masked some of the more awkward CG).

Add to that a trio of villains – and a massive, anticlimactic big baddy – never given much depth, and what you have is a film full of sound and fury, signifying nothing.

You never get a sense that Hellboy (Ron Perlman, who must feel latex is a curse by now) can be injured – he survives acid, fire, water and more with barely a scratch – so you never feel any danger in a given battle. On one level, it's a relatively faithful adaptation of the source material (a rarity to delight in), but sadly, it's a film that's all dressed up and goes nowhere. After watching Guillermo del Toro's adaptation of Mike Mignola's Hellboy (Columbia/Tristar, Rated PG-13, DVD-$28.95 SRP), I'm of two minds.
